Letter to Editor: AIDS identified in Paris, but established as AIDS cause here
2006-07-05

Dear Windy City Times Editor:

I notice you state on the national AIDS timeline by Amy Wooten that you posted on June 14, 2006, that in 1983, "a Paris researcher discovered AIDS is caused by a retrovirus".

Please note that the above is inaccurate. While Luc Montagnier ( the Paris researcher ) first identified and photographed the HIV virus, he and his team did not establish that the virus causes AIDS. This was done a year later, in 1984, by Dr. Gallo and his team at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Montagnier and Dr. Gallo share credit as co-discoverers of HIV as the cause of AIDS.

The full account of the discovery can be found in articles written separately and jointly by Dr. Gallo and Dr. Montagnier that appeared in the journals "Science" and "The New England Journal of Medicine" in 2003. For your convenience, I am providing you with this link to the articles:

I trust that you will make the necessary correction. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Tim McCoy
