The 2009 Ride for AIDS Chicago—a two-day, 180 mile bicycle ride from Evanston's Northwestern University to Elkhorn, Wis., and back, held June 6-7—was a huge financial success.

Produced by Test Positive Aware Network ( TPAN ) , the ride raises funds for HIV/AIDS services in the Chicago area, and this year's event raised about $129,000—the most for this event in at least five years. "It was a really good ride, though it was cold, wet and windy at times," said TPAN's Rhett Lindsay. "We weren't too sure how this year's ride would do [ financially ] because of the economic situation, but it turned out great."

There were 125 riders this year, and they have until the end of June to continue fundraising. "This year's riders were really dedicated to the cause. They were really committed to finishing the ride and the fundraising," Lindsay said. Photos and text by Ross Forman
