Dan Strackeljahn ( top left photo ) ran to glory June 26, as the 26-year-old Lockport resident finished first in the 5K portion of the annual Proud to Run race, which started and finished near Montrose Avenue and the lakefront. The event also included a 10K race and a walk.
"It was nice to win," Strackeljahn, a student, told Windy City Times. "It was a nice day out on the lakefront, though the humidity wasn't too nice to run in, but I'm used to it from training runs."
More than 1,000 runners and walkers participated, some wearing rainbow leis, some wearing attire from the 1970s and some, well, just wearing traditional running wear. Brent Nicholson Earle carried the rainbow flag during his walk on the route.
"It was a good event, especially being able to incorporate the International Rainbow Memorial Run," said volunteer coordinator David Reithoffer. Photos and text by Ross Forman
