McCombs has been an integral part of Chicago's LGBT community since the 1970s, when she first fought back against racial carding in the bars, volunteered at lesbian groups, and helped create safe social spaces for women. As part of Executive Sweet, she and business partner Vera Washington made sure that African_American lesbians, and their friends, have had a place to socialize for more than 25 years.
