Chichester has been a gay activist since the early 1970s, serving in vital leadership positions. Groups included the Chicago Gay Alliance, as president when they opened the first gay community center in Chicago; Strike Against AIDS; the mayor's LGBT Advisory Council; Chicago gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame; Metropolitan Sports Association; the NAMES Project; Howard Brown Health Center; and much more.
