Middleton is openly gay and president of Roosevelt University, the first openly gay person appointed to lead a major university in the U.S. He has two sons, one daughter, two grandsons and two granddaughters. He has supported many Chicago and national groups, including Center on Halsted ( as a board member ) and the Human Rights Campaign. When in Colorado, he was a founder of the Boulder County AIDS Project.
