Zuniga was one of the first victims of 'don't ask, don't tell,' the U.S. military's gay ban. He came out during the build-up to lifting the military's long-standing police banning gay people, but when President Bill Clinton announced a compromise with 'don't ask,' Zuniga lost his post, despite having been Soldier of the Year. In more recent years he worked for an international AIDS group based in Chicago.
